Federal minister Bruce Billson has suffered a minor scare after a powder-like substance sent to his Melbourne office prompted an evacuation.

The small business minister's Frankston electorate office was evacuated on Wednesday afternoon after staff uncovered the powder in an envelope with no markings.

The powder was later tested and found to be harmless.

Mr Billson thanked emergency services for their prompt response and those who expressed concern for his staff.

"I'm pleased to report that the powder-like substance in my office is harmless. All staff are safe," he tweeted.

Police are conducting final safety checks at the office.
