The bomb squad has declared the Wilsonton Heights shopping centre safe after a suspicious device was found outside early this morning.

Police were called to the shopping strip at the intersection of Tor and Hogg Streets at around 5.20am local time.

Specialist police were at the scene and assessed the situation, declaring it safe at around 9.45am (AEST).

Homes and businesses around Tor Street, Hogg Street, Holberton Street and High Court Drive had been evacuated, but have now been allowed to return.

Roads closed as part of the police operation have also since reopened.
