Election will murder jobs: Labor MP

The longest election campaign in living memory is going to murder jobs, a federal Labor MP has warned.

Nick Champion said retailers experienced slumps during campaigns because people stop spending.

"I've been out talking with retailers in my electorate and they know this uncertainty is pretty bad for business," he told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.

Liberal MP Craig Laundy dismissed the warning as the concerns of someone who sat in a safe electorate.

Mr Laundy said the campaign started three years ago when he was elected to represent the marginal western Sydney electorate of Reid.

"It is all well and good for Nick to talk about the spin-offs of it, but the reality is that we are in a fight over the next 74 days for the future of our country," he told reporters.
