Independent Senator Nick Xenophon looks set to be the big winner in South Australia in today's federal election.

His Nick Xenophon Team (NXT) is poised to win at least three Senate seats, which would give it significant influence in the next parliament.

Mr Xenophon arrived to vote on a bright orange motorised tricycle, and told waiting media "It's almost over, bar the counting."

Some opinion polls and analysts have suggested NXT could get up to 30 percent of the vote in SA.

Mr Xenophon's lower house candidates could also cause some upsets, with their best chances in the Liberal held seats of Mayo, Barker and Grey.

Today, Liberal Mayo MP Jamie Briggs said he was "very confident" of holding his seat.

He said expects his candidates to finish second in several contests, and that they may be hampered by decisions from the Labor and Liberal camps to preference against him.

If Labor has any chance of picking up seats in SA, its best bet is Hindmarsh, where Matt Williams holds sway with a slender 1.9 percent buffer in the western Adelaide electorate.
