A 72-year-old man has been attacked while trying to defend his own home overnight.

It’s believed three men stormed into the man's home on Endeavour Drive in Cranbourne North around 11.20pm, before the homeowner confronted them.

He was stabbed in the head with what police believe was a pitchfork, before the men fled.

It’s unknown whether they took anything with him.

Next-door neighbour Mary Arul Ganesh said she heard the men talking and arguing.

"We were watching people walking around on our [CCTV] camera," she said.

"It's really scary... It makes me panicked."

The frightening home invasion comes as the state’s number of crime offences jumped by more than 10 percent.

Recorded crime statistics show there were 552,005 offences recorded by Victoria Police last year, up 10.2 percent compared to the same period the year before, according to the Crime Statistics Agency report released this morning.

The man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, while the three dark-clothed wearing offenders are still at large.
