Abbott loyalists boycotting Eden-Monaro MP
Conservative ACT Liberals are reportedly denying support to Peter Hendy's campaign to retain a NSW bellwether seat, as revenge for his role in toppling Tony Abbott as prime minister.
An email leaked from the Menzies Group, a subset of the Liberal Party, said it was unlikely Eden-Monaro will receive the same level of support from Canberra as it had in the past.
"Some members have been heard at Canberra Liberals functions openly talking about their desire to see the incumbent (Dr Hendy) lose the seat," the email obtained by ABC TV said.
The email said, this was disappointing because the party was designed by Sir Robert Menzies to be a broad-based alliance of conservatives and moderates.
Any true Liberals should prefer Malcolm Turnbull as prime minister over Bill Shorten, the email said.
It urged members to assist campaign efforts in Queanbeyan.
Dr Hendy has declined to comment while a spokesman for Mr Abbott said he supports the election of the Turnbull government and is supporting his colleagues.
