Disgraced former Labor MP could face more jail time

Eddie Obeid is facing more time behind bars with the crown arguing nothing other than full time custody is sufficient for the disgraced former Labor MP.

Justice Elizabeth Fullerton was also asked to jail his son Moses Obeid and former Resources Minister Ian Macdonald for more than seven years for their roles in the Mt Penny scandal.

Crown prosecutor Sophie Callan, SC argued by misusing their positions in Parliament both Obeid and Macdonald had damaged "the integrity of democracy."

In July all three men were found guilty of taking part in the conspiracy.

Macdonald passed on confidential information which helped secure a tender for a coal mining exploration license over an area which included the Obeid's property in the Bylong Valley.

The Obeids made $30 million and stood to make another $30 million.

The Crown argued his crime on this occasion was worse than his corrupt dealings with Circular Quay leases for which he was handed a maximum five year sentence.

Obeid was released to parole in 2019 after serving the minimum three years.

Both Obeid and Macdonald tendered multiple medical reports and will tomorrow argue they should be given special treatment because of their ailing health.

Moses Obeid argued he had suffered a "dramatic increase" in headaches since his first dose of a COVID-19 vaccination which needed to be investigated further.
