Six people killed in Easter road accidents

Six people have died on Australian roads this Easter, but the period's road toll is one of the lowest in years.

A 70-year-old woman was killed in a two-car crash at Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley on Monday afternoon.

A motorcyclist was also killed on Monday in Gidgegannup, northeast of Perth, the second death in Western Australia over the Easter long weekend.

Fatalities have been recorded in the Northern Territory, NSW and in Victoria, where an unborn baby was killed.

But the Easter road toll remains on track to be the lowest in years.

Queensland has so far had a fatality-free Easter weekend, but police say the number of drivers caught under the influence of drugs has more than tripled.

Last year, Queensland had the worst Easter road toll for more than two decades with eight fatalities.

Police across the country have been running state-based operations during the Easter long weekend, targeting drink and drug driving, speeding, mobile-phone use and other forms of dangerous driving.

The toll period runs until midnight on Easter Monday.
