Tsunami risk from Victoria earthquake dismissed by top scientist

A leading earthquake scientist has dismissed concerns the quake on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula this morning could bring about a tsunami.

The government's Geoscience Australia website said the quake struck at about 4.39am.

The website showed the epicentre at Main Ridge, at a depth of 10km.

It registered a magnitude 3.2.

Seismology Research Centre chief scientist Adam Pascale told 3AW that at that magnitude, there was no danger of any oceanic cataclysm.

"It's not going to be big enough to shift any water," he said.

He said a quake would have to be in the magnitude 6 to 7 range for that to be a danger - but such a quake was theoretically feasible.

Pascal said a magnitude 7.5 quake was the largest that could be expected from any of the observed faults in Australia, but that these existed around the country.

However, he said earthquakes were not increasing in frequency.

"We're reporting a lot more I think ... but if you look at the records, it's been consistent," he said.

Ambulance Victoria told 9news.com.au they had received no calls relating to the earthquake.
