Immigration Minister Peter Dutton is open to revoking the citizenship of dual national who fight for terror groups in the Middle East.

He cited the United Kingdom's model, which has seen 27 people stripped of their citizenship, as a potential framework for Australia to follow.

Britain passed laws last year that allowed the government to strip dual nationals of citizenship as well as citizens with no second nationality who were naturalised as adults.

If citizenship is not in the public interest, the UK home secretary has the power to withdraw it.

However, Mr Dutton told reporters in Brisbane on Friday he was cautious about making changes that would result in people becoming stateless.
