Dust storms filmed in Pilbara as Cyclone Yvette approaches

A severe weather warning has been issued across Western Australia's northwest with Cyclone Yvette expected to reach landfall by Christmas Day.

The Bureau of Meteorology have warned wind gusts of up to 90km/h and heavy rainfall could cause flash flooding.

Video shot yesterday by motorists en route to Port Hedland in the Pilbara region shows a massive front of dust consuming everything in its path like a giant wave.

While Cyclone Yvette is currently approximately 700km northwest of Karratha the storm has been forecast to rise in ferocity and become a Category 2 cyclone before making landfall between Broome and Port Hedland in the next few days.

One of the driving forces of a cyclone is the ocean's higher temperature at this time of year, occurring anytime between November and April.

Sea temperatures around northern Australia have surpassed 30 degrees in recent weeks.

The BoM are urging residents to start preparing cyclone kits with three days’ worth of supplies.

They recommend a battery-powered radio, drinking water, non-perishable foods, a camp stove and up-to-date medications.
