Dubbo zoo welcomes newborn lion cubs

Taronga Western Plains Zoo has welcomed four newborn lion cubs at its country New South Wales sanctuary.

The male African Lion cubs were born on November 19 to parents Maya and Lazarus.

Keepers at the zoo said the cubs, who are yet to be named, are growing and developing well.

“Maya is a very attentive and nurturing mother, we couldn’t be happier with the maternal behaviours that we are observing to date,” Greg Kirk, a keeper at the zoo, said.

“The cubs have received their first health check and vaccination from the zoo’s veterinarian and all received a clean bill of health. 

“They are now starting to venture out of the den and explore their surroundings behind-the-scenes.”

The cubs were born as part of a breeding program at the zoo as African Lions are classified as vulnerable in the wild.

The newborns will make their exhibit debut next month.
