A Canberra man was nearly four times the legal limit when he was caught driving his granddaughter to school, police say.

The 60-year-old ran his car into a road sign, mounted the kerb and collided with two parked cars in the school carpark.

The girl wasn't hurt. ACT police say the man registered a blood alcohol reading of 0.197.

He'll appear in the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.

The incident occurred at the Holy Spirit Primary School in the suburb of Nicholls on Monday morning.
