Drunk driver jailed for fatal Vic crash

A drunk, drugged and disqualified driver caused a fatal head-on collision in Victoria after veering on to the wrong side of the road at 50km/h over the speed limit.

Hayden Ball, 23, on Tuesday was jailed for at least four years for the July 26 crash last year that killed 70-year-old Longwarry man Ian Wall.

Ball, who had his licence suspended three months before the crash, had been drinking with his father in a Gippsland pub before trying to drive home.

He veered on to the wrong side of the road at Tynong, and hit Mr Wall's car head-on.

Ball, of Cranbourne, was travelling at about 120km/h in a 70km/h zone at the time of the crash.

Mr Wall died at the scene.

Tests after the crash revealed Ball had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.112 - more than twice the legal limit - and that he had recently consumed cannabis.

Victorian County Court Judge Michael Bourke said Ball was driving dangerously and inexcusably fast.

He said Mr Wall was an energetic and generous man who was committed to doing charity work.

"He had much still to give and is greatly missed by his friends and family," Judge Bourke said.

Judge Bourke sentenced Ball to six years and and four months' jail, with a non-parole period of four years.

Ball, who pleaded guilty to culpable driving causing death and driving while disqualified, was barred from holding a driver's licence for a further four years.
