Drought appeal launched in NSW

People are being urged to donate to an appeal for drought-hit farmers in NSW.

The We're for the Bush Appeal has been launched by News Corp Australia and Macquarie Radio, in partnership with the NSW Farmers Association, Salvation Army and Commonwealth Bank.

Donations can be made at branches of the Commonwealth Bank, which has kicked in $50,000, while News Corp and 2GB have each contributed $25,000.

All proceeds will go to the Salvation Army, which will distribute vouchers that farmers can redeem for food at IGA Supermarkets and fodder at CRT Country Stores.

Last week the NSW government announced additional emergency measures, on top of those detailed in November last year, for farmers struggling in the drought.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott is winding up a two-day tour of dry regions in NSW and Queensland, promising a drought assistance package for farmers will be announced next week.

Metcash and its independently-owned IGA NSW stores have pledged $15,000.
