Drivers filmed rolling past Brisbane stop sign as police renew calls for Queenslanders to observe road rules

Eleven out of 12 drivers caught on camera at an inner Brisbane stop sign rolled right through rather than stopping, after a staggering number of drivers were also fined for the offence last year.

Last financial year, 13,143 Queenslanders were fined for failing to stop at stop signs, according to the Queensland Department of Main Roads and Transport. 

The issue seems to be a continuing one, with 9NEWS filming 11 out of 12 drivers failing to stop at a Rosalie intersection.

The only driver who did stop was a learner.

Many Queensland drivers also seem confused about the requirements of coming to a stop at the signs, with some suggesting there is a required time of three seconds.

However, police advised that vehicles must come to a complete halt at the sign but that there is no time requirement.

"Then check both directions to make sure it's clear to go, and then you can continue through the intersection once you have deemed it safe to do so," Road Policing Command Senior Constable Vaughan Carman said.

"Stop sign is simple – they just need to stop."

The penalty for failing to stop at a stop sign is $353 and three demerit points.

The road rule also applies to cyclists, almost 300 of which were fined for running stop signs in the same period.
