NSW driver who left a woman a quadriplegic in crash set to avoid jail

A NSW driver who crashed after falling asleep at the wheel, leaving a woman a quadriplegic, appears to have avoided jail.

Trevor Huyshe rear-ended Kerrie Edwards’ car after she stopped at a set of lights near Wyong on the Central Coast on her way home from work in April 2015.

The then-24-year-old ran from the scene, leaving Ms Edwards trapped in her vehicle in a critical condition. 

Huyshe turned himself in to police the next day.

“(Huyshe's driving) constituted a real and as it turned out a very dangerous situation for other users of the road,” Judge Roy Ellis said.

“The offender is both highly aware of the consequences to the victim of his driving and significantly distressed at what it is he has done to her life.”

Judge Ellis ordered Huyshe be assessed to see if he could serve his one year and 11 month term under supervision in the community, rather than in custody.

Ms Edwards says after court he approached her and finally apologised.

“He just said that he was really sorry for what he had done,” Ms Edwards said.

She broke down as she spoke about forgiving the young man.

“There's no point... there's no point in living with a hate like that cos it just destroys every thing.”

She also took the opportunity to plead with drivers not to take chances.

“It was said in court that he was overtired and tiredness was the cause.”

Her children were by her side and spoke about how proud they are of the grandmother.

Husyhe will return to court in October to confirm the sentence.
