Driver who crashed into dance studio ‘had no control of car’

Ray Reeves has been left shattered after going through the worst day of his life.

The 82-year-old was behind the wheel of his Toyota Camry when it smashed through a dance studio in Wollongong yesterday morning.

He claims the accelerator somehow jammed as he and his wife Margaret reversed, before it suddenly lurched forward.

Mums and toddlers attending a play group inside the studio were directly in its path.

"I had my foot on the brake and I couldn't stop,” Mr Reeves said.

“I went through the wall and I saw the lady and I tried to dodge her... I had no control of the car."

An 18-month-old girl remains at Sydney's Children's Hospital with head injuries, while her mother Stacey suffered broken legs.

Malika Elizabeth was also hit by the car as she pulled her son to safety.

"If I hadn't moved like I did, he would have been seriously injured or killed,” she said.

Police have seized the Reeves’ car to undergo a mechanical investigation.

They say they will wait until they receive a report to speak with him again.

Mr Reeves' daughter and her husband who now run the business the Reeves started over 60 years ago continued the big clean up today.

They will join Ms Elizabeth and hold fundraisers for their friends in hospital in the coming weeks.
