NSW driver tried to save child she fatally hit

A four-wheel-drive driver tried to save the life of a four-year-old boy after he ran into the path of her vehicle on the NSW Central Coast.

The little boy from North Sydney was struck out the front of the family’s holiday rental home on Three Points Avenue, Macmaster Beach around 6pm on Monday.

The driver, a 64-year-old woman who lives in the area, is believed to be a nurse and performed CPR on the boy with the help of his grandfather, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

“She has kids herself,” a resident who did not want to be named told the newspaper.

“She’s still in hospital and absolutely devastated.”

Paramedics treated the four-year-old at the scene but he went into cardiac arrest and was declared dead before a helicopter could arrive to take him to hospital.

Locals said the boy had been holidaying with his parents, grandparents and two siblings and arrived just days before the accident.

Police said there were no signs the driver had been speeding at the time of the accident.
