Woman charged over NSW hit and run

A New Zealand woman who allegedly sped off after her car hit a four-year-old girl in northern NSW has been caught and charged.

Police began searching for the woman on Saturday morning after the girl was struck as she walked along Lighthouse Road in Byron Bay with her parents.

"The girl had been thrown down an embankment and sustained a suspected fractured leg," police said.

She was treated by paramedics before being taken to Brisbane Children's Hospital.

After several hours of investigation police on Saturday afternoon arrested a 27-year-old woman.

She was charged with several offences including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm. Her licence was suspended.

Conditional bail was granted and she's due before Tweed Heads Local Court on Monday.
