A young driver has been killed in a high-speed crash after evading police north of the Melbourne CBD.

The unidentified man was ejected from his car after causing a trail of destruction about 11pm yesterday.

Victoria Road in Northcote has been blocked off to traffic as police sift through debris stretching hundreds of metres.

The driver allegedly sped off in his dark Holden sedan after police tried to intercept him for a traffic matter.

A short time later a pursuit began and police tracked the car to the scene of the major crash, where the driver had smashed into a number of parked cars and fences.

He was flung from the vehicle and landed about 15m from his car. He died on the street despite the efforts of police.

Major Collision Investigation Unit Detectives have been combing the site and are expected to remain on the road for hours.

An investigation will also be conducted by the Professional Standards Command within Victoria Police.
