Car slams into home metres away from grandfather's bed

An unlicensed driver has been charged after a car ploughed into an elderly man's home while he was lying in bed.

The 83-year-old was just metres away from the site of the impact, which took place just after midnight.

The Mercedes was allegedly driven by a 35-year-old Noble Park man who was being followed by police.

The car careered out of control, striking a BMW and a van before hitting the curb, becoming airborne, and crashing into the home.

The driver fled the scene.

Paramedics tended to the 83-year-old resident, Evangelos, who refused to go to hospital.

Police say officers were not pursuing the alleged driver, but that they tried to intercept him 700 metres from the crash site.

Neighbours said moments after the crash, a man exited the Mercedes and fled on foot, leaving a woman behind.

A man was charged with a range of offences, and bailed to face court in May.

The woman was released pending further inquiries.
