'Drunk, unlicensed' teen driver charged over crash that killed passenger

The alleged driver of a car that crashed and killed a Victorian man in South Australia has been charged and refused police bail.

The 18-year-old is accused of being behind the wheel when a car left the Riddoch Highway, and rolled and hit a pole at Naracoorte near the Victorian border yesterday afternoon.

A 23-year-old passenger died at the scene and a second passenger, 22, has been flown to Flinders Medical Centre with non-life threatening injuries.

The teen received treatment for minor injuries at Naracoorte Hospital and was then arrested by police.

He is charged with aggravated cause death and cause injury by dangerous driving, driving unlicensed, plus drink driving after he allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.107 or more than double the legal limit of 0.05.

He was refused police bail and will appear in the Mt Gambier Magistrates Court tomorrow.
