The accident happened at the Eastern Freeway entrance in Nunawading. (9NEWS) 

A driver has been arrested after a motorcyclist was fatally hit by a car as he tried to enter Melbourne's Eastern Freeway in Nunawading this morning.  

The motorcyclist was turning from Springvale Road on to the freeway on-ramp when he was hit about 6.30am AEDT, Victoria Police said.

He suffered serious head and leg injuries and died at the scene.

The car's male driver has been arrested and is assisting police.

Investigators have closed the north-bound lanes of Springvale Road to examine the scene.
