Driver arrested after allegedly leaving passengers for dead following Melbourne crash

A 21-year old man has been arrested while allegedly trying to flee the scene of a car crash that left three of his passengers seriously injured in Melbourne's north-east this morning.

Police allege a Holden Commodore with five people inside was travelling north along Grange Road when hit two parked cars and a tree at the intersection of Grange Road and McGregor Street in Fairfield about 5.45am AEDT.

Minutes earlier, police en route to another incident had allegedly seen the same car running a red light at the intersection of Heidelberg Road.

The officers turned onto Grange Road and discovered the crash scene.

Three passengers were ejected from the car and were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

An 18-year-old woman is in a serious but stable condition, while a man, 20, is in a stable condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

A 17-year-old girl is in a stable condition at The Alfred Hospital.

The driver was arrested after allegedly attempting to flee from the scene and is assisting police with their enquiries.

"People just have to realise that excessive speed is going to result in disaster," Acting Sergeant Meredith Grisold from Victoria Police said. 

"We're very lucky that we're not looking at five fatalities here."
