The jukebox musical Dream Lover is just days away from making its Melbourne debut, with Channel 9’s very own David Campbell the star of the show.

The production is dedicated to the legendary singer and actor Bobby Darin and celebrates his hits from the fifties and sixties.

There's incredible similarities of my own life with him,” Campbell told 9NEWS.

“Growing up thinking your grandmother was your mother and your mother was your sister is exactly my story.. Although Jimmy Barnes isn’t Bobby Darin's parent.”

The Australians production explores the singer’s struggles from early on, and features Hannah Frederickson as his wife Sandra Dee and Marina Prior as his so-called mother.

Dream Lover opens on New Year’s Eve at the State Theatre.
