Draft laws to improve consumer data access

Draft laws which would allow customers to request copies of their personal information held by private companies have been introduced to federal parliament.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says the "consumer data right" is a game-changer for small businesses and individuals as it will allow them to harness their own data by deciding who can use it and how.

"It will drive competition and improve the flow of information around the Australian economy," he told the lower house as he introduced the bill on Wednesday.
