Why is Donald Trump in Davos?

For most of the year Davos is an exclusive Swiss alpine resort.

But for a few days each January its clientele is even more high end.

World leaders, some of the globe’s richest men and women, celebrities, intellectuals and other members of the world’s elite mix, network and share ideas in the snow at the World Economic Forum.

It began in the 1970s as a way for European business leaders to learn from their American counterparts.

Now it’s evolved into a jamboree that effectively promotes globalisation with speeches and panel talks.

This year the theme is the “Fourth Industrial Revolution” - how workers can survive increased automation and artificial intelligence.

So why then is Donald Trump going?

He’s the first sitting US President to attend since Bill Clinton in 2000.

Trump's overarching policy both before and after his election has been “America First”.

His election pitches included re-opening American steel mills that had closed due to cheaper foreign made products.

He’s called trade pacts that open up American markets to foreign competition bad deals.

But Trump, as the world knows, is a showman and performer.

And what greater stage than the Swiss Alps, among fellow billionaires and heads of state, with the eyes of the world on "The Donald"?

Maybe the man whose most famous policy is to “build the wall” to stop immigration from Mexico, will attend one of the sessions highlighting “A Day in the Life of a Refugee”.

Or not.

Though at a place where the rich fly in on private planes, and are ferried from the airport by helicopter to discuss how to help the poor … it wouldn’t be the only hypocritical situation.
