Australian of the Year David Morrison has rubbished suggestions the scale of domestic violence has been overstated.

Responding to suggestions on ABC's Q&A program that some statistics show a decline in domestic violence, Mr Morrison said it was the greatest social problem in Australia.

"Let me tell you, there are people dying and people whose lives are absolutely ruined as a result of domestic violence and we are all as a society the victim. That's bulls***," he said.
