Dodgy toys pulled from shelves in Christmas safety blitz

Forty-one types of potentially deadly children's toys have been pulled off the shelves as part of a state-wide Christmas safety blitz.

NSW Fair Trading inspectors visited almost 1000 businesses throughout Sydney and uncovered dozens of dangerous toys intended to be sold this December.

The ditched toys ranged from a car lighter through to cuddly toys with exposed batteries and trucks with small removable parts.

Of the 41 products seized, 31 had dangerous small parts that posed a serious choking hazard.

Most of the toys were found in discount shops, pop-up shops and markets.

"These dodgy toys have been removed from stores and Fair Trading will take immediate action against those traders," Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean said.

Individuals caught selling dangerous toys face a maximum fine of $220,000, while companies can face fines of up to 1.1 million dollars.

NSW Fair Trading warns anything smaller than a ping pong ball or an Australian 20 cent coin could choke a child under 3 years.
