Distracted driver almost speared by ute's tray in Bruce Highway crash

A suspected rubbernecker has almost been speared by the tray of a Queensland ute after ramming into the vehicle when it could not stop in time.

A tow truck at the scene of an earlier crash on the Bruce Highway on the Sunshine Coast yesterday filmed the dramatic crash when the driver of a sedan towing a caravan is believed to have been distracted.

Footage from cameras mounted to the Clayton's Towing truck show a large group of people, including emergency services personnel in fluorescent uniforms, surrounding a ute that had rolled on the side of the highway near Kiel Mountain about 3pm.

Some of the traffic streaming along the busy road slow in apparent attempts to look at the crash scene when the sedan towing a caravan comes crashing into view.

Large clouds of smoke surround the car's tyres as it tries unsuccessfully to stop.

A spokeswoman for Queensland Police told ninemsn the driver had been distracted by the car that had rolled over and was trying to change lanes without realising a ute was already in the other lane.

"It has sideswiped the left side of the tray, and the aluminium tray has speared into the windscreen, narrowly missing the driver," the spokeswoman told ninemsn.

Incredibly, none of the four people in the two vehicles were injured.
