Shia community in fear after drive-by mosque shooting leaves father in hospital

Shots fired from a passing car have left Sydney mosque attendee Rasoul Al Mousawi, a father-of-five, unconscious in hospital.

In the early hours of the morning today, police swarm in Greenacre over the Shia muslim prayer, where shots were fired.

Mr Al Mousawi, 47,  was shot in the face and shoulder, with pellets and remains unconscious.

His daughter was too afraid to be identified, but saw it all.

"We just heard two loud bangs ... all I saw was blood running down his head and neck," she said.

It's believed the shots were fired from a passing car.
 
"My dad has done nothing wrong - to anyone - it was really low what they did."

People from the prayer hall claim the attack was timed to coincide with one on the most important dates on the Shia religious calendar - the holy month of Muharram.

"They just drop by, stop, make an 'ISIS live forever' and then they take off," she said.

Community leader Jamal Daoud said the community was fearful of such attacks.

"This is a warning that something bigger could happen. A lot of people in the community are worried about beheadings," he said.

As police conducted line searches of the scene, detectives examined CCTV from businesses in the industrial estate.

Moments later the street is filled with flashing lights - as paramedics and police respond.

"We're following further lines of inquiries and speaking to witnesses to establish a motive for the offence," Inspector David Firth said.

The community has vowed to continue with events for Muharram.
