Disability steward wants wait times halved

The federal minister in charge of national disability services wants wait times for children accessing support cut by half within months.

Stuart Robert is promising to slash average wait times for children to receive National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plans from 127 days to 50.

For children waiting longer than 50 days due to the complexity of their cases, the government will also introduce six-month interim plans.

The new waiting "cap" of 50 days will come into effect from October.

"We're going to surge resourcing into that area," Mr Robert told ABC radio on Thursday.

The minister has been hosting meetings with NDIS participants across the country, and says wait times have been a key issue.

"People are looking for access decisions quickly, especially in the early childhood space," he said.
