Disability groups 'blink out of existence'

Peak disability advocacy groups say government funding cuts have gutted their work and silenced the voices of people with disability.

Almost one year on after bodies representing the blind, deaf and those with physical disabilities were told their funding would be reduced weeks before Christmas, some warn their future is under threat.

Peak body Australian Federation of Disability Organisations says it's been a difficult year.

"Some of those organisations are about to blink out of existence," chief Matthew Wright told AAP.

Campaigns such as accessible electoral voting for the blind and better captioning for the deaf have been stymied.

"Those things are just not happening at the extent they were before," Mr Wright said.

Mr Wright said people with disability often felt they did not have a voice to affect change in their lives - and that's why advocacy was important.

"When you start diminishing those voices you make a decision that adversely affects their lives," he said.

To coincide with International Day of People with Disability on Thursday, Labor has vowed to give extra funds to peak disability groups if elected.

The organisations, including those that had funding cut, would have a share in a $2 million pool.
