Dick Smith reportedly considering running in the next federal election

Entrepreneur Dick Smith is reportedly considering standing against former Speaker Bronwyn Bishop at the next federal election.

The well-known businessman and philanthropist is mulling whether to challenge the 73-year-old politician, with polling indicating he could "romp it in" in Mrs Bishop's seat of Mackellar on Sydney's Northern Beaches, Fairfax Media reports.

It is understood Mr Smith has been approached by senior figures in the aviation industry that are urging him to stand in a bid to push through aviation reform.

Polling of voters in Mackellar paid for by the group indicated Mr Smith would win the seat, with Ms Bishop tarnished by the infamous "choppergate" scandal that shook the then Abbott government last year.

"They told me they spent money on polling and 'you would romp it in'," Mr Smith told Fairfax.

"I have been asked to stand and I am thinking about it – I would only do it as an independent."

He said he the first person he would ring if he does stand would be Ms Bishop, whom he has known since they attended primary school together in Roseville on Sydney's north shore.

Mr Smith last year flagged running against former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat of Warringah.
