Dick Smith launches $1m campaign calling for reduced immigration
“Angry” entrepreneur Dick Smith is launching a $1 million advertising campaign calling for reduced immigration.
The television advertisement, which will air from tomorrow, uses the voice of John Stanton - the voice behind the infamous 1987 Grim Reaper ad about AIDS.
“Endless growth will destroy Australia as we know it today,” Mr Smith said of his motive for the campaign.
The Fair Go campaign calls for an immigration plan that halves the number of people coming to Australia, as well as an increase taxes on the wealthy, and hits out at Australia’s major political parties.
“It is simply endless growth and endless greed – meaning the finite wealth has to be divided between more people, and that means less for most,” Mr Smith said.
He said the wealthiest 1% of Australians “own more than the bottom 70%”.
“Eight out of ten Australians I talk to want a proper population plan, but no major political party reflects this. They are so obsessed with pleasing the 1% who have all the money that the greed overruns all,” Mr Smith said.
Mr Smith will also hand out toy pitchforks to warn of the violent “revolution” if no action is taken.
His media team said Mr Smith was “angry” he had to spend $1 million to get his point across, adding it should be going to charities like St Vincent de Paul and the Salvos.
The campaign will be launched at Sydney’s Hilton Hotel today.
