Desperate Australians renting tents in apartments

Desperate Australians are going to extreme lengths to save money, even renting tents in Melbourne apartments, balconies and backyards.

One opportunistic landlord has offered space in a tent for between $90-$130 per week, according to The Age.

Photos show the extreme living arrangements, with living rooms cordoned off into tiny spaces for makeshift rooms.

A "cheap" and "very comfortable" tent out the back of an apartment in Melbourne’s Southbank has also been advertised on Gumtree. 

There are no laws preventing people from subletting an apartment space or sleeping in a tent on private property, a Melbourne City Council spokesman said.

However, it is illegal for apartments to be separately rented without being registered and having written permission, according to Victoria Consumer Affairs.
