Dep PM hints farmer backpacker tax break

Tourists working on farms may be cushioned from the backpackers tax for the upcoming season as the government pledges to get the "labour requirements" right to ensure crops get to market.

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce is refusing to reveal any exemptions to the new tax before making his submission to cabinet, but hinted there could be temporary quarantining for some industries.

"So that we can get large numbers of labourers in for the short amount of time that's required to get that crop off, get it to market, earn that town money, earn our nation money," he told Sky News on Thursday.

The controversial tax of 32.5 cents in the dollar is due to start in January, following a delay for a review.

Mr Joyce has promised to reveal the details within four to six weeks.
