Broken wire responsible for Perth girl's electric shock

The family of Denishar Woods has been told a broken wire is responsible for her being shocked by more than 200 volts of electricity.

The 11-year-old suffered a catastrophic brain injury five weeks ago when she was shocked while turning off a tap outside her state owned home in Beldon, Perth.

Energy Safety Investigators today met with Denishar and her family, and confirmed a broken wire disrupted the circuit, causing electricity to flow through household appliances.

“So we’re aware of that, but we’re also investigating why there was so much voltage at the property,” Peter Johnston from Energy Safety WA said.

Investigators said the tap was live for only a matter of minutes, however other surfaces inside the house may have also caused a shock.

“It does happen from time to time, it’s not just unique to Perth, it does happen on the type of systems we run,” Mr Johnston added.

It comes as Denishar’s condition slowly improves. She squeezed her grandmother’s hand this week and has also begun saying a few words.
