Demolition work begins on iconic Parramatta Stadium

Demolition crews have begun the slow process of tearing apart Parramatta Stadium to make way for a new venue.

The demolition comes ahead of a new $300 million stadium that is expected to be open for the start of the 2019 NRL season.

Construction crews said they will spend at least a few months levelling the stadium before work on the new one begins.

NSW MP Geoff Lee said the construction work will be a positive influence on the economy.

"This is going to create jobs," Mr Lee said.

"1200 as we built it, but I'm really excited about the 800 to 1000 ongoing jobs, he said.

Parramatta Stadium, which opened in 1986, was built to be home to the NRL’s Parramatta Eels.

The new stadium, which will also be home to the Eels, will seat around 30,000 people.

"You very rarely see bad games in full stadiums and that’s what we are going to have here," Parramatta Eels CEO Bernie Gurr said.

"For the fans and the players, it will be the best game day experience in Australia."
