NSW plan to issue demerit points for parking in disabled spots

NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay has reportedly asked his department to make it an offence for motorists to park in spaces reserved for the disbaled.

News Corp reports Mr Gay made the move after receiving complaints from a a Sydney council and a number of MPs about disabled parking spots being used illegally.

According to the Office of State Revenue, about 16,000 fines are issued for disabled zone parking breaches each year.

Approximately 800,000 Australian hold a disability parking permit.

Mr Gay said able-bodied people who steal disabled car parks are "low-lifes".

"I have utmost sympathy for the people who are disadvantaged by this sick behaviour," he said.

In the UK, parking illegally in a disabled spot results in a fine of up to AU$1,840, in San Francisco the fine is about AU$1,100, while in New South Wales the fine for parking in a disabled space without a permit is $519.
