Demand for Canberra workers perks up

The doom and gloom overhanging the nation's capital following the May budget appears to clearing.

Fears the ACT could be heading into a recession on the back of severe cuts to the public service appear unfounded with the territory enjoying the strongest demand for workers.

New data, released on Wednesday, shows that job vacancies in the ACT posted on the internet in September jumped by 7.8 per cent, far higher than any other state.

Over the year, Canberra job vacancies have grown 19.2 per cent.

That result pips NSW (18.4 per cent) which was described in another survey earlier this week as the nation's strongest state.

Overall, the Department of Employment's vacancy report showed job vacancies eased by a seasonally adjusted 0.8 per cent nationwide, to be 11.8 per cent up on the year.

Seven out of the eight occupational groups the department monitors declined with machinery operators and drivers the least in demand, falling three per cent in the month.
