Defence official spends big on boots

In the hope of getting a better deal, a defence official spent $370,000 on new army boots when he was only allowed to spend $40,000.
Defence official Geoffrey Brown told a Senate estimates committee hearing the spending was unapproved, but it wasn't actually fraud because the boots existed, had gone into defence inventory and were being worn by soldiers.
