Neighbours surprise deaf man by learning sign language

His day begins like any other – little does he know, minutes later he will be in tears.

Istanbul resident Muharrem, who is deaf, and sister Ozlem set off for a walk through their neighbourhood.

Before long, Muharrem is taken aback when he encounters a stranger who signs "good morning" to him.

On their next stop, a local shop keeper offers him a "hot bagel" through hand signals.

Then a stranger, who he helped to collect a dropped bag of fruit, uses sign language to offer him an apple as thanks.

"Do you know him?" Muharrem signs to his sister before accepting the fruit. "Thank you."

His surprise turns to bewilderment as more and more people sign to him, with each run-in captured using dozens of hidden cameras set up around the area.

Gradually, he realises that everyone he encounters is able to communicate with him through signing.

In a final flourish, Muharrem is pointed towards an electronic advertising board.

A woman pictured on the screen delivers him the heartwarming message "Because a world without barriers is our dream as well" moving Muharrem to tears.

The elaborate stunt, which took a month to prepare, was orchestrated by Samsung and ad agency Leo Burnett to promote the phone company's call centre for the hearing impaired.

The video has been viewed more than three million times since being uploaded to YouTube last week.
