Dead roo found cable-tied in Victoria

A kangaroo has been found dead, cable-tied to a deckchair in northern Victoria with a drink tied to its arm, in what wildlife carers have slammed a sick prank.

The kangaroo was found on a steep embankment of the Murray River near Cobram on Monday by a mother and her young children who called the local wildlife rescue.

Kylee Donkers from Dutch Thunder Wildlife Care and Rescue in Koonoomoo said the small adult female was tied around the neck and hind legs, with a soft drink can tied to her arm on the banks of Dead River Beach, a popular camping area downstream of Cobram.

"This vulgar prank is in poor taste and whoever did this went to a lot of effort," she said.

"I hope they get the message that such sick behaviour is not acceptable."

The Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) wants public help to find the culprits.

Kangaroos are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975 and the offenders could face penalties of up to $36,090 or two years' jail or both.

DEPI regional program manager of compliance, Geoff McClure, said many campers and boat users would have seen the kangaroo.

While it is unclear how it died, it showed no signs of a struggle or gunshot and it was possible it was hit by a car and moved, he said.
