'It's just abuse': Senator David Leyonhjelm hits back at sexist claims

Outspoken Liberal Democrat Senator David Leyonhjelm denies he targets women and says he abuses people irrespective of gender.

At war with the Greens Sarah Hanson-Young, over alleged "sexual slurs" against her, Mr Leyonhjem said he calls people "bastards" or "bitches" regardless of their sex.

"It's just abuse," he told ABC radio.

He said he had previously abused journalists and Tony Abbott's former chief-of-staff Peta Credlin.

"I am a normal Australian, I am elected by normal Australians, normal Australians call people bitches, bastards, shut up, things of that nature,” he said.

"I don't discriminate between men and women."

Senator Hanson-Young is considering legal action against David Leyonhjelm over comments that included telling her to "stop shagging men", claiming he had "slut shamed" her.

Mr Leyonhjelm said he was responding to remarks by Ms Hanson-Young that meant all men were rapists.

He is still refusing to apologise, despite calls from Prime Minister Malcolm Tunrbull and Opposition leader Bill Shorten.

Senator Hanson-Young says she neither said, nor implied, what he had claimed.
