Data unlikely to be helpful for Hockey

Joe Hockey will be hoping for some good news on the economy over the next few days to take the spotlight off his position as treasurer.

However, economists say that will be unlikely because tepid economic growth is expected to have been recorded in the June quarter when the national accounts are released on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has thrown his full support behind his treasurer after a media report said two cabinet ministers had urged the Liberal leader to dump Mr Hockey should the party perform badly in the September 19 by-election in Canning.

The West Australian electorate has previously been a safe Liberal seat.

Mr Abbott says nobody has approached him with concerns about Mr Hockey.

The treasurer will come face-to-face with his colleagues on Tuesday at their first cabinet meeting in a fortnight.

Mr Hockey will travel to Turkey on Wednesday to attend a two-day G20 finance ministers meeting in Ankara.
