Meet the Darwin women hoping to take roller derby to the Olympics

Roller derby could become an Olympic sensation, with teams from around the world meeting in China to showcase their skills in front of an Olympic Games committee.

A raucous contact sport that sees competitors racing and tussling on roller skates, roller derby is dominated by women in amateur leagues around the world.

This September, five Darwin women will be part of the team representing Australia at the World Roller Games in Nanjing.

“I’m so excited, it’s just crazy and beyond my wildest dreams,” Kylie York told 9NEWS.

It’s the first time the federal government and international sports commission has recognised an Australian team.

Around 4000 athletes from 70 countries will take part in the 10-day Inter-continental Cup Tournament.

Competitors from the US, Spain and Japan will go head-to-head with Australia, but competitors insisted they’re just hoping to get people talking about roller derby.

“It’s really exciting and it is extraordinary to be part of history,” Team Australia member Karen Avery said.
