Boy, 16, killed in motorcycle collision metres from home

The motorcycle which fatally collided with a car in Darwin's rural area overnight wasn't registered or fitted with a headlight, according to NT Police.

Xavier Lengyel, 16, was riding along Leonino Road in Darwin River around 7.30pm yesterday when it's believed a car overtook another vehicle and crashed head-on with the bike.

The teenager died at the scene, a few hundred metres from his family's home.

Sergeant Mark Casey from NT Police described the crash as "tragic, unavoidable, unnecessary death".

"It was after sunset so it was dark," he said.

"There's no street lights out there and it is quite dark in the rural area."

The road was closed from Reedbeds to Duddell Road overnight until the Major Crash Investigation Unit arrived at first light to examine the scene.

Sergeant Casey said the driver of the car returned a negative breath test and speed isn't believed to have been a factor in the crash.

Mr Lengyel was a Year 11 student at Taminmin College and an avid bike fan.

One friend, who did not want to be named, remembered him as selfless.

"Xavier was the kind of guy that would put others before himself, he had a beautiful heart and soul and impacted a lot of peoples lives with his kindness," she said.

"He was always there for everyone no matter what state he was in himself."

James Ronald Brian Alford-Wells wrote on social media, "RIP Xavier, fly high brother."

Lilly Stacey posted, "we all will miss you Xavier, thoughts and condolences are with your family."

Mr Lengyel's death brings the NT road toll for 2018 to eight; two more than last year.
