Flamboyant mayor claims he is under attack by vigilantes

Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons claims the firebombing of his inner-city nightclub in June was a targeted attack.

Three hooded men armed with a jerry can of hi-octane racing fuel were caught on CCTV attempting to firebomb Home House, a nightclub part-owned by the Geelong Mayor.

However the firebomb bounced off the window, igniting the pavement in front of the club instead.

Mr Lyons told 9NEWS he believes the incident in June is one of six direct attacks on his mayorship.

"Had an attempted break-in in the last week, two car break-ins, one attempted, one successful," he said.

Elected in November last year, the former paparazzi king says he's been embraced by the people of Geelong but a select few are trying to destroy him.

Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said he felt for the Geelong Mayor.

"No one should have to put up with that, public life or not," he said.

Police believe the firebombing was an isolated incident, possibly a disgruntled patron of the nightclub.

Mr Lyons also claimed a threatening letter was sent to his Geelong home, but would not give details on what was said.

"I'm not prepared to go into that until I've discussed that with police," he said.

The Mayor has since increased his home security, installing cameras in every corner of his home.
